Jan Marisse Huizing, artistic director of The International Holland Music Sessions (2002-2010)

Dutch pianist Jan Marisse Huizing studied piano at the Amsterdam Conservatory with Jaap Spaanderman and harpsichord at the Brabant Conservatory with Jaap Spigt and continued his piano study with Heinz Scholz at the Mozarteum in Salzburg and with Jan Ekier at the Chopin Academy in Warsaw. In 1961 he won the first prize at the national piano competition of the Jeunesses Musicales and from then on performed as soloist, chamber musician and in productions with the Amsterdam Philharmonic Orchestra and the Netherlands Dance Theatre (NDT).

From 1973 to 2004 Prof. Huizing was leading an international renowned piano class at the Amsterdam Conservatory. Huizing's research into historical performance practice led to the publication of a great number of articles in magazines such as 'Mens & Melodie' and 'The Piano Bulletin', as well as a book focusing on the interpretation of the Chopin Etudes (De Toorts, 1996) A German translation made in co-operation with the late renowned pianist Detlef Kraus will be released at 'Schott Verlag' in autumn 2009). Also Prof. Huizing assisted in the new National Polish Chopin Edition (new revised edition of the 1st piano concerto).

Jan Marisse Huizing was artistic advisor of the Grand Piano Festival in Amsterdam and  Chopin Festivals in Bergen NH and Groningen and he was for many years member of the board of EPTA (European Piano Teachers Association) in the Netherlands.

Prof. Huizing is regularly invited to give master classes in Europe (Amsterdam, Bergen, Berlin, Paris, St. Petersburg, Bucharest) and recently has been invited by the America-China International Music Foundation to conduct master classes in China in 2009 (Shenyang, Wuhan, Urümqi). He also participated in festivals in Antwerp, London and Prague. Prof. Huizing is a sought-after jury member in international competitions, among them the International Johannes Brahms Piano Competition in Hamburg, the European Gina Bachauer Competition, the Quatre Mains Competition in Anvers and the International Jeunesses Musicales Piano Competition in Bucharest.

Since 2002 Jan Marisse Huizing is artistic director of The International Holland Music Sessions. In 2004 he founded The International Dinu Lipatti-Clara Haskil Foundation. [www.lipatti-haskil-foundation.com]

Jan Marisse Huizing resigns from The International Holland Music Sessions

After having been associated for over 20 years with TIHMS, artistic director Jan Marisse Huizing has resigned from The International Holland Music Sessions.

Huizing was involved in TIHMS since 1989 - at first as a faculty member and artistic advisor and since 2002 until January 2010 as member of the faculty and artistic director.

Under his artistic leadership The International Holland Music Sessions started the highly succesful series of international concerts "New Masters on Tour", now taking place in more than 15 countries. 

Also the annual Summer Academy has developed into a very successful starting point for violinists, cellists and pianists, leading many young instrumentalists to success at renowned international competitions and successful international careers.

In the future Huizing likes to spend more of his time on teaching and writing. His book on the Chopin Etudes was published in a German edition in October 2009 by Schott Verlag (Schott ED 8744). 

A book on the Beethoven Sonatas is in preparation. Moreover Jan Marisse Huizing wants to be involved in the further development  of the International Lipatti-Haskil-Foundation (www.lipatti-haskil-foundation.com) of which he is the founder and president since 2004.
